Earth construction Workshop in Morocco

When tradition meets innovation

In the context of the postgraduate certificate Building Beyond Borders of the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of Hasselt University, we are pleased to invite you to this workshop at Ouled Merzoug, a small village in the heart of Morocco.

The aim of this workshop is to promote and spread vernacular knowledge about ecological, bioclimatic building, using natural materials such as raw earth, to valorize local knowledge and question the current way of constructing. We will be hosted by the local woman’s association, in their building, realised during a former BBB program.

During this 10-day workshop, you will do hands-on experiments with different earth construction techniques, guided by local professionals. A series of introductory lectures will be given by BC architects & studies & materials. These will give you a look into the traditions and history of earth construction techniques while also elaborating on contemporary applications in a Western context. Finally, the region offers a wide variety of architecture using vernacular earth construction techniques. We will take the time to visit traditional architecture as well as contemporary ones.

You will be accommodated by local families, which will allow you to experience the village culture in depth. Local families will host participants at their own houses. The woman’s association of Ouled Merzoug will manage this, making sure that you get a great experience, including traditional dishes, Moroccan bread and traditional tea.

Note that the workshop will be given mainly in English, but partly in French.

A certificate of the workshop will be delivered by Hasselt University to all participants of the workshop.
