Parallel design studio Hasselt University (BE) – Cape Peninsula University of Technology (SA)
As architects, we cannot design happiness, liveliness or friendly neighbours, but we can imagine and envision places that people feel connected to, and wich facilitate interaction and creativity. We can design places that make a difference, places where one feels at home.
In this studio we tackle the challenge of place-making through the concept of Kanalah (helping each other) and buurt maken (creating a neighbourhood), exploring two locations on opposite sides of the world: District Six in Cape Town and Canal North-East in Brussels, using research-by-design, sharing experience, knowledge and visions.
Five projects for Canal North-East by the CPUT students are presented below as a cross-section of the fine results for Brussels of this collaborative design studio. On the previous page, you can find five for District Six by the UH students.

This building gives the site back to the pedestrian. Landscaping and upper circulation echoes the language of Parc de la Senne to create access and dialogue between the park and street.

Our aim is to create a connective link between the existing Ilot and streetscape. This is achieved through creating an inclusive public urban-oasis which follows the tetromino concept, regenerating the area through community involvement and communal distribution.

THE ATRIUM

The Atrium is intended to be a focal point and income generator of the site connecting Chau D' Anvers and Parc De la Senne. This multifunctioning Atrium space allows the building to establish a sustainably functioning Ground floor that draws in the community activates the street facades and invites commuters to circulate through the building by using this linking space to gain access back into the under-utilized Parc de la Senne.

Our project aims to animate Chausee D'Anvers and enhance the connection between pedestrians, the street and the Parc de la Senne. It does so by providing a lively, affable space for people to meet, work and connect.

Located right next to the canal, and abutting an existing cement factory, the vision was to activate the wide sidewalk, but also provide a destination for the locals and tourists visiting the area.
