IUC ARU (Tanzania) kickstarts the African Center for Sustainable Cities Studies

An institutional university cooperation (IUC) is a programme of 10 years, aimed at strengthening the capacities of one specific university in the South. IUC’s have an annual budget between 350.000€ and 570.000€, with 2 to 5 different academic projects and one transversal project for capacity building. Hasselt University is the coordinator of the IUC with ARU (Tanzania), 2022-2032
IUC ARU coordinators: prof. Rob Cuyvers (UHasselt), prof. Gabriel Kassenga (ARU)

Summary
Lime hemp is a building material with a unique hygrothermal behaviour and ecological benefits. Besides incorporating a large share of renewable and fast-growing hemp shives, lime hemp combines thermal insulating properties and a high thermal inertia with a good moisture buffering behaviour. However, despite the growing interest in the material and promising lab results, the thermal performance in real conditions is still uncertain. In this 2-year VLAIO-TETRA-project, the hygrothermal behaviour of several lime hemp elements is investigated and the performance of real-life lime hemp projects is monitored and analysed. To support the design and execution of lime hemp applications in practice, guidelines and constructional details are developed for the Flemish context.
